U is for UU

The merger of the American Unitarian Association (AUA) and the Universalist Church of America (UCA) on May 12, 1961, created the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The merger was years in the making and was preceded by many contentious discussions both between the AUA and UCA and within each of those groups. There were class issues and stereotypes to overcome, with Unitarians being historically associated with wealth and higher education and Universalists being associated with “common folk.” And, there were theological differences which were debated as the Original 6 Principles were proposed and amended. But, the commitment to social justice as well as the affirmation of the free search for meaning linked both communities and gave the basis for a successful merger.
