About the Chalice
The Unitarian Universalist (UU) chalice, which is part of UUCDC’s logo, came into widespread use by UU congregations on Sundays during the last 20 years.
Our chalice is lit by congregants at the beginning of worship services and some other church events. It symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual insight. The flame represents the light of illumination and understanding.
In the days preceding World War II, the Boston-based Unitarian Service Committee (UNC) was attempting to rescue Unitarians and other religious liberals from parts of Europe (notably Czechoslovakia) where their lives were threatened by Nazism. The flaming chalice was the code by which those needing to be rescued identified themselves.
Let us know if you or your family would like to light our chalice at an upcoming service by contacting the Worship Committee.
