Religions and the spiritual practices they engendered stretch back centuries. Because of their antiquity, we tend to disregard them. However, if we regard all the major religions as attempts to mold the rough material of human nature toward justice, well-being, compassion, and peace, we can begin to appreciate them more. If we take the additional step of comparing spiritual practices that have passed the test of time with what today's science tells us about what creates emotional and mental well-being, and helps strengthen relationships, we have made an important discovery. The growing scientific understanding of neuroplasticity (our brain's remarkable ability to reorganize its structure, functions, and connections in response to learning or experience) also affirms our ability to learn new ways of thinking and acting. Nature itself, by the turning of the seasons, seems to suggest that our lives are defined by cycles of change and renewal. This Sunday I will reflect on the significance of how and why the idea of beginning again has importance for our lives as we begin a new year. ...
