Last Week RE Highlights
We had a great Sunday in RE last week.
- Our Preschoolers and Kindergartners combined classes to celebrate their unique selves. They read Frederick by Leo Leonni and created paper mice.
- 1st/2nd graders learned about the pagan holiday Lammas and how we can make the world a more magical place.
- 3rd/4th grade class focused on the ways in which we can all make a difference in the world. They learned about child slavery/forced labor and watched a video about Nobel Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi who offered some ideas for ways that kids everywhere can help end this practice.
- The 5th/6th graders are also tacking big issues. They are focusing on hate crimes this month and started by consulting the Souther Poverty Law Center’s list of 10 Ways to Fight Hate.
- Our 7th/8th grade Our Whole Lives (OWL) class discussed the characteristics of healthy relationships and considered power dynamics in relationships.
- And I had the privilege of leading our Coming of Age youth in a class on Theology. We built our Theological Houses (based on the book A House for Hope by John A. Buehrens and Rebecca Ann Parker ) discussing each level as we built:
- The Foundation—How do we view people and God
- The Walls—What holds us together (sources, principles, covenant)
- The Door—Mission – how do we answer the call of love
- The Roof—What we believe about salvation and how we understand evil
- The Garden—How we view the end of life, both human lives and the life of the universe.
