Z is for Zsigmond

Zsigmond János (John Sigismund) was King of Hungry and the first Prince of Transylvania. He was fascinated by theological debate and opened his court to theologians the main Christian sects of the day: Catholics, Unitarians, Lutherans and Calvinists. Along with his court preacher, Francis David, Zsigmond participated in years of debate and learning. Finally, he issued the famous Edict of Torda which advocated religious freedom. Sadly, shortly after the Edict of Torda, Zsigmond was removed from power and Francis David was imprisoned for his religious beliefs.
